“Every reportedly haunted location has a human story underneath it — and understanding that story is the only way to be a responsible investigator. You stop jumping to conclusions and start asking better questions.”

The Investigation

Before we ever set up a single piece of equipment, I want to know everything I can about a location — its history, the people who lived there, and the stories that have been passed down over the years. The Phelps Mansion in Binghamton, New York gave us plenty to work with. Built in the 1870s, this stunning Victorian-era home has stood for more than 150 years, and the history inside its walls is as layered as the ornate woodwork that lines every room.

Findings

I've walked through a lot of historic properties over the years, but the Phelps Mansion stopped me in my tracks the moment I stepped through the front door. Sherman D. Phelps built this home in the 1870s, and whoever he hired knew exactly what they were doing. We're talking massive doors with hardware that still operates smoothly after a century and a half, detailed millwork and carved woodwork throughout, and rooms that feel like they were frozen in time on purpose. As a museum, the property has done an incredible job preserving not just the physical structure but the story of the Phelps family and the people connected to this place across generations.

My approach to any location always starts the same way — history first, equipment second. I need to understand who lived here, what they experienced, and what kinds of events took place within these walls before I can even begin to evaluate any claims of paranormal activity. Walking through the Phelps Mansion room by room with that mindset, I was paying attention to more than just the aesthetics. I was listening for the stories. Every reportedly haunted location has a human story underneath it, and more often than not, that story explains a lot of what people experience when they're inside. Drafts, settling foundations, acoustics in high-ceilinged Victorian rooms — these things matter, and understanding the architecture helps me rule out natural explanations before I ever consider anything else.

What struck me most during this initial walk-through was just how much of the original character of the home has been preserved. The furnishings, the layout, the scale of the rooms — it all paints a vivid picture of what life looked like for a prominent family in upstate New York during the Gilded Age. But the Phelps Mansion isn't just a showcase of period architecture. There are real stories here, stories about the people who lived and died in this house, about the events that unfolded over more than 150 years, and about the experiences that staff, volunteers, and visitors have reported in more recent times. I'm not ready to draw any conclusions yet — that comes during the investigation — but I'll say this: the history alone gives us plenty of threads worth pulling.

This video is purely the tour and the history. I wanted to give you a full picture of what we're dealing with before the investigation begins, because context matters. When you understand a location at this level — its architecture, its people, its past — you become a much better investigator. You stop jumping to conclusions and start asking better questions. That's the whole foundation of what I've built with TAPS over the years, and it's the standard I hold myself to every single time I walk into a new location. The investigation of the Phelps Mansion is coming, and I can tell you right now it's going to be a fascinating one. Stay tuned.

Verdict

The Phelps Mansion is one of those locations that earns your respect before the investigation even begins — the history is rich, the building is remarkable, and the stories are compelling enough to take seriously. Whether the paranormal claims hold up under scrutiny is exactly what I intend to find out. The investigation is next, and I'm going in the same way I always do: open minded, skeptical, and determined to find the truth.
